높은 적색편이 퀘이사들은 빅뱅설과 충돌한다.

(High-redshift quasars produce more big bang surprises)

      빅뱅(big bang) 패러다임에서 은하계 밖의 적색편이(extragalactic redshifts)는 우주 기원의 중요한 단서를 제공한다고 가정되고 있다. 그래서 사람들은 높은 적색편이를 보이는 퀘이사(quasars, quasi-stellar objects, 준성)들은 매우 초기 우주의 단면을 제공하고 있다고 생각했다. 그러나 최근 X-선과 전파(radio) 연구를 통해 그러한 해석에 문제가 있음이 드러났다. 왜냐하면 그러한 높은 적색편이 퀘이사들은 매우 큰 중심질량(아마도 초거대 블랙홀)을 가지고 있음에도, 훨씬 작은 적색편이를 보이는 퀘이사와 구성 원소가 매우 비슷하기 때문이다. 따라서 그것들은 그들에게 부여된 ‘젊은’ 나이(10억 년 정도)에도 불구하고, 성숙한 모습으로 나타나고 있다. 더군다나 높은 적색편이를 보이는 퀘이사의 스펙트럼을 통해 추론된 빅뱅 패러다임의 재이온화(reionization) 과정의 시간과 길이는 최근에 윌킨스 마이크로웨이브 비등방 프로브(Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe) 데이터에 기초한 모습과 상충된다. 빅뱅 우주론으로는 설명하기 어려운 이러한 결과들은 높은 적색편이를 보이는 천체가 놀랍도록 성숙해 보인다는 축적된 증거들에 또 하나의 증거를 추가시키고 있는 것이다. 그러나 이러한 증거들은 창조론적 우주론과는 잘 들어맞는다. 이러한 현상들을 좀 더 연구한다면 성경적 해석과 나란히 하는 우주론 모델을 개발하는데 큰 도움이 될 것이다.


퀘이사 적색편이 (Quasar redshifts)

1963년 마틴 슈미트(Maarten Schmidt)가 별의 전파 근원인 퀘이사 3C 273이 은하수(Milky Way galaxy)의 어떤 별보다 훨씬 높은 적색편이를 보인다는 것을 발견한 이후로[1], 퀘이사 또는 퀘이사-스텔라 천체는 더욱 격렬한 논쟁을 불러일으켰다. 3C 273의 적색편이 값은 z=0.158로 주어졌는데, 이는 스펙트럼 선의 파장이 15.8% 늘어났다는 것을 의미한다. 따라서, 만약 중성 수소원자의 H 베타선이 3C 273에서 486.1nm 파장을 갖는 파란색 빛으로 방출될 경우, 이것은 563.2 nm의 녹색 빛처럼 관측된다는 것을 뜻한다.[2] 여기서, 퀘이사 3C 273의 적색편이를 도플러 편이(Doppler shift)로 해석하면, 3C 273는 관측자로부터 47,000km/s (1초에 47,000km)의 속도로 멀어져가고 있는 것이다. 만약 이 수치를 71km/s per megaparsec의 허블 상수를 가지는 우주의 일반적 팽창에 기인한 것으로서 재해석한다면, 3C 273는 지구로부터 20억 광년 떨어져 있음을 의미한다[3]. 그리고 이것은 퀘이사 3C 273의 가시광선 광도(luminosity)가 우리 은하계에서도 상당히 밝은 별인 태양보다 10^12(=1조) 배나 더 밝다는 것을 의미한다. 그림 1은 3C 273의 광학-제트(optical jet)와 주인 은하(host galaxy)를 보여주는 허블 망원경 이미지이다.

퀘이사 3C 273의 광원은 그 세기가 한 달의 시간 간격으로 변할 수 있다[2]. 이는 그것의 지름이 1광달(1 light-month)보다 클 수 없다는 것을 의미한다. 왜냐하면 빛의 생성 메커니즘의 변화가 빛의 속도보다 빠르게 그 근원을 가로질러 전달될 수 없기 때문이다. 그러한 1광달의 거리는 은하수 직경의 백만분의 일 정도밖에 안 되는 은하 스케일에서는 미미한 거리이다. 다른 퀘이사들에서 변화는 더욱 빠르다. 이것은 광원의 크기가 더욱 작다는 것을 의미한다. 이러한 몇몇 은하계의 작은 빛 근원들은 1960년대에는 전례가 없던 것들이었고, 몇몇 연구자들이 퀘이사 적색편이의 우주론적 해석을 거부했던 하나의 이유이기도 했다.


이러한 문제점들에도 불구하고, 퀘이사 적색편이는 우주의 생성과 구조에서 기인한 것으로 일반적으로 생각하고 있다. 즉, 그것이 우주의 부분적인 효과이기 보다, 우주 전체의 팽창 때문에 기인된 것이라는 것이다. 그래서 사람들은 가장 높은 적색편이를 보이는 퀘이사를 찾고, 연구하는데 많은 노력을 기울여왔다. 왜냐하면 그러한 퀘이사는 가장 멀리 떨어져있는 우주의 끝이라고 생각했기 때문이다. 가장 최근에 이러한 아이디어에서 착안한 광범위한 시도가 시작되었는데, 그것이 바로 ‘슬로안 디지털 스카이 서베이(Sloan Digital Sky Survey, SDSS, 우주거대구조 탐사사업)’이다[4]. 미국 뉴멕시코 주에 위치한 아파치포인트 천문대(Apache Point Observatory)의 SDSS 망원경은 지름 2.5m의 거울과 고체촬상소자(charge-coupled devices, CCDs, 빛을 전기로 변환시켜 판독될 수 있도록 만드는 장치)를 이용하여 빛 측정 및 분석을 용이하게 할 수 있다. SDSS는 은하들을 주로 관측하고 있으나, 소행성, 별, 퀘이사들도 관측하고 있다. 현재 5만개의 퀘이사들에 대한 관측 결과가 공개되었고, 적색편이 z가 2.3 이상 되는 퀘이사가 5700개가 넘는 것으로 나타났고, 더 많은 것들이 관측될 것으로 예상된다. 따라서 SDSS는 발견된 가장 높은 적색편이를 보이는 퀘이사들의 대부분을 기입하고 있다고 주장한다.[5, 6, 7] 이들 천체의 적색편이는 z가 ~6에 이르는 것들도 보고되었다. 이는 121.6nm의 라이만 알파(Lyman alpha, Lyα) 수소원자 스펙트럼에서 두드러지는 자외선 영역의 빛이 근적외선의 빛으로 관측됨을 의미하는 것이다.

그러한 높은 적색편이 퀘이사에 사람들이 특별한 관심을 보이는 이유는, 단순히 그것이 가장 밝은 광원이기 보다, 그것이 빅뱅 패러다임 내에서 바로 초기 우주의 탐색기 역할을 하기 때문이다. 일반적으로 인정되는 빅뱅 패러다임의 순서는 다음과 같다[8];

(i) 빅뱅 이후 약 40만 년 후 복사에너지는 충분히 냉각되어 원자들(대부분 수소원자)이 형성되었다. 따라서 우주는 복사선에 불투명하게 되었다. 오늘날 관측되는 우주배경복사(cosmic background radiation)는 이 시기에 방출된 것으로 여겨진다.

(ii) 이후 수백만 년 동안 별들과 은하들이 형성되었고, 대부분의 거대 질량 별들은 별의 일생 주기를 마치고 초신성(supernovae)으로 폭발하였다.

(iii) 한때 뜨겁고 밝은 별들이 형성됐었고, 그 별들에서 대량의 자외선이 방출되었고, 방출된 자외선으로 인해 은하들 사이의 공간에 원자들의 대부분은 이온화되었다. 이것은 초기에 형성됐던 원자들의 안개를 제거하였고, 우주는 다시 복사선에 투명하게 되었다. ”재이온화 시대(reionization epoch)”로 알려진 이러한 단계는 초기 우주의 구체적인 역사를 규명하고자 하는 천문학자들에게 매우 중요하다.


어떻게 높은 적색편이 퀘이사가 재이온화 시대를 탐색하는 데에 이용될 수 있을까? 만약 퀘이사의 빛이 수소 원자 구름 사이를 낮은 적색편이로 지나간다면, 그 빛은 구름에 있는 수소 원자의 양자 전이(quantum transitions)에 상응하는 파장에서 흡수될 것이다. 그리고 관측된 퀘이사 스펙트럼에서 딥(dip, 곡선의 깊이 패인 부분) 또는 흡수선(absorption lines) 들을 만들 것이다. 그림 2는 이 효과를 보여준다. 가장 중요한 흡수는 라이만 전이에 의해 일어나는데, 이때 수소원자의 전자는 바닥상태에서 첫 번째 들뜬상태로 전이된다. 그러나 관측되는 파장은 자외선 영역이 아닌(라이만 전이는 자외선 방출), 흡수하는 구름의 적색편이에 부합하는 파장인, 가시광선 또는 적외선 영역으로 대게 이동된다. 만약 흡수 물질이 관측 방향으로 충분히 많이 쌓여있었다면, 퀘이사 스펙트럼의 라이만 방출에 해당하는 짧은 파장 영역의 많은 부분은 거의 사라졌을 것이다. 이는 ‘건-피터슨(Gunn-Peterson)’ 효과로 알려져 있다[9]. 그러나 만약 수많은 흡수 영역들이 있다면, 퀘이사 스펙트럼은 많은 얇은 라이만 흡수선들을 포함할 것이다. 이것을 라이만 알파숲(Lyman alpha forest)이라고 부른다.


이러한 건-피터슨 효과는 은하계간 중성 수소의 하나의 서명으로써 인식되고 있다. 그러나 건과 피터슨은 예측했던 결과와는 반대로 z = 2 퀘이사의 스펙트럼에서 그 효과가 나타나지 않는다는 사실에 주목했다. 이는 엄밀하게 우주공간의 중성 수소 양의 상한 값에 해당한다는 것을 말해준다. 이는 SDSS 이전에 발견된 모든 퀘이사의 경우들에도 마찬가지인데, 은하계 사이 수소는 모두 이온화되어 있어 매우 높은 적색편이를 띄게 되는 것이다. 그러나 2001년 SDSS가 z ~ 6 퀘이사들을 발견하기 시작하면서, 이것들은 그들의 스펙트럼에서 정말로 건-피터슨 딥을 보여주었다. 따라서 적색편이 6 정도는 재이온화 시대(빅뱅 패러다임으로)와 관련된 것처럼 보인다.


퀘이사는 일반적으로 초거대질량 블랙홀을 포함하는 활발한 은하의 극도로 거대한 에너지 핵으로 이해되고 있다. 그 거대한 에너지 방출은 블랙홀의 증대에 의해서 연료를 공급받는다고 추정되고 있다. z ~ 6은 관측될 수 있는 은하계의 가장 초기 시대에 해당하므로, 그 시기에 존재했던 퀘이사의 관측은 우주의 일반적인 상태뿐만 아니라, 은하형성 과정에 관한  중요한 정보를 제공할 것이다. 따라서 이러한 퀘이사들은 재이온화 시대를 탐지하는 천체로서 뿐만 아니라, 그 자체가 매우 흥미로운 물체이다. 그러나 최근에 세 개의 그러한 퀘이사들에 대한 X-선과 전파 연구는 매우 예기치 않은 결과를 보여주었다.
