(Catastrophic Granite Formation)

개요

심성암으로서 화강암질 마그마(granitic magmas)들의 생성, 그들의 이어진 관입(intrusion), 결정화(crystallization), 그리고 냉각(cooling)에 대한 시간 척도는 지구의 역사를 6000-7000 년으로 보는, 그리고 전 지구적인 대홍수 격변이 있었다는 성경적 시간 틀과 모순되지 않는다. 하부 지각(lower crust)의 부분적 용융은 주요한 제한 단계로 생각되었지만, 이제 그것은 단지 수년에서 수십 년이 걸린 것으로 추정되어지고 있다. 따라서 화강암질 마그마들의 커다란 저장고를 만들기 위한 부분적 용융은 초기 창조주간(Creation Week)에 일어난 가속화된 핵붕괴(accelerated nuclear decay)의 결과로서 홍수 이전 시기(pre-Flood era)에 발생할 수 있었다. 오늘날 암맥(dikes)들을 통해 단지 수일 정도 걸리는 것으로 알려진 신속한 분결작용(segregation), 상승(ascent), 정치(emplacement, 定置)는 전 지구적 창세기 대홍수 격변을 유발한 격변적 판구조(catastrophic plate tectonics)들의 이동 동안에 지판들의 “압출(squeezing)과 펌핑(pumping)”에 의해서 도움을 받았을 것이다. 이제 화강암질 심성암들의 대부분 판상의 얇은 판(tabular sheets)들로 되어있음이 확인되고 있기 때문에, 결정화와 냉각은 모암(host rocks) 속의 천수(meteoric waters, 지하수중 대기로부터 유래된 물)와 열수 대류 순환(hydrothermal convective circulation)에 의하여 훨씬 더 쉽게 그리고 빠르게 진행되어졌을 것이다.

수 시간 내에 마그마로부터 커다란 결정들이 성장하는 것이 오늘날 실험적으로 확인되었다. 반면에 같은 흑운모 박편(biotite flakes) 내에 우라늄과 폴로늄(polonium, 매우 짧은 반감기를 가지는)의 방사성할로(radiohalos)들이 서로 인접하여 같이 형성되어 있는 것은 화강암질 심성암의 결정화와 냉각에 불과 6-10일 정도의 시간이 걸렸다는 것을 의미한다. 따라서 하부지각의 부분적인 용융으로부터 상부 지각으로 화강암질 심성암들이 위치하게 되고 이들이 결정화되고 냉각되는 데에 걸린 총 시간은 지구 역사에 대한 성경적 시간틀과 전혀 모순되지 않을 뿐만 아니라, 1년여의 전 지구적 대홍수 격변(Flood catastrophe) 동안 화석을 포함하는 지질기록의 대부분을 설명하는 데에도 전혀 지장을 주지 않는다.


서론

요세미티 국립공원(Yosemite National Park)과 같은 지표면의 어떤 지역에서 거의 독점적인 암석 형태는 화강암(granite)이다. 인접된 많은 화강암체들의 거대한 노두들이 그 지역(그림1) 전반에 걸쳐서 대규모적으로 나타나있다. 이들 화강암체들은 시에라네바다와 중남부 캘리포니아의 반도산맥(Peninsular Ranges)을 따라 나타나 있다.

시에라네바다 저반(batholith, 화성암이 불규칙적으로 형성된 큰 덩어리)은 장엄한 시에라네바다 산맥의 많은 부분을 형성하고 있고 노출되어 있는 모든 화강암체에 붙여진 집합명사이다. 각각의 식별할 수 있을 만큼 구별되어진 화강암 덩어리(그 경계는 육상에서 추적 가능하다)들은 지질도에서 하나의 심성암(a pluton)이라 불려지는 하나의 분리된 지질단위로서 표시된다. 그러한 화강암질 심성암(granite plutons) 수백 개가 시에라네바다 저반(Sierra Nevada batholith)을 이루고 있는데, 각각의 크기는 1km2 에서 1,000km2에 이르며, 각각 고유한 이름들을 가지고 있다. 그 저반은 서북-남동 방향으로 약 600km 길이로 뻗쳐있고, 폭은 165km 이상에 이른다. 화강암질 심성암의 깊이가 얼마인지, 즉 그것의 두께가 얼마인지는 분명치 않다. 증거들은 이들 대부분의 두께가 수 킬로미터 전후에 불과할 수 있음을 제시하고 있다.

시에라네바다 저반(Sierra Nevada batholith)과 그것의 바로 남쪽에 있는 반도산맥 저반(Peninsular Ranges batholith)은 태평양 해분(Pacific Ocean basin)을 에워싸고 있는 저반의 불연속 벨트의 일부분이다. 예컨대 화강암 저반들은 남미대륙의 서부 해안을 따라 전 해안 산맥들에 걸쳐 발견되고, 아이다호와 몬태나, 서부 캐나다로부터 북향하여 알래스카까지 뻗쳐있다. 시에라네바다 저반을 구성하고 있는 화강암질 심성암은 초기 퇴적암과 화산암층을 뚫고 관입되어 대체 되었다. 그중의 어떤 것들은 열과 압력과 지각운동에 의해서 변성암으로 변형되었다. 이들의 층서는 후기 원생대(선캄브리아기 최상부)에서 고생대, 그리고 고생대에서 중생대(지구역사에 대한 성경적 구조 틀에서 이들은 홍수 지층들)까지 여러 가지로 정해져 왔다. 화강암질 심성암이 지하에서 이들 지층 층서로 관입한 후, 발생한 침식(홍수 말과 이후에 일어난)은 화강암 위의 모든 암석들을 제거하였고, 오늘날 그들을 지표면에 노출시켰다. 침식으로 깎여나간 퇴적층의 두께가 얼마였을지는 알 수 없으나, 아마도 1–3 km 정도였을 것으로 보인다.

오늘날에는 화강암이 형성되는 것을 목격하지 못하기 때문에, 화강암이 어떻게 형성되었는 가에 대해 수 세기 동안 격렬한 논쟁이 있어왔다. 이제는 많은 의견일치가 있지만, 관련된 세부적인 몇 가지 과정들은 아직도 계속해서 밝혀져 가고 있는 중이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 최근까지도 전통적인 학자들은 화강암들이 형성되는 데에 수백만 년이 걸렸을 것이라는 생각에 매우 확고하다. 따라서 이것은 성경에서 분명히 가르치고 있는 6000~7000년의 지구 나이와 1년여 동안에 걸친 전 지구적인 창세기 대홍수를 거부하는 데에 자주 사용되는 과학적 반론이 되고 있다. (Strahler 1987; Young 1977).

화강암을 형성하기 위해서는 반드시 몇몇 단계들이 요구된다. 화강암 형성의 진행 과정은 육지의 퇴적암과 지각의 땅 속 20~40km 지점에 있는 변성암의 부분적 용융으로부터 시작한다.(발생(generation)이라 불려지는 과정). (Brown 1994). 이어서 용융된 물질들의 수집이(분결작용이라 불려지는) 뒤따라야만 한다. 그리고 이제 저밀도로 된 부유성을 가진 마그마들의 위로 솟아 올라감이 일어나고(상승), 그리고 마지막으로 상부 지각에 암체를 형성하기 위해서 마그마의 관입(intrusion)이 일어나는 것이다.(정치). 지표면에서 2–5 km 정도 낮은 곳에서 화강암 덩어리들은 완전히 결정화되고 냉각된다. 이어서 일어난 침식이 그것을 지표로 노출시켰다. 이 연속적인 과정들의 목록을 살펴볼 때, 화강암의 형성 특히 요세미티 지역에서 드러난 엄청나게 거대한 화강암 덩어리의 형성은 분명 수백만 년이 걸렸을 것으로 지금까지 상상해왔다는 것은 쉽게 이해가 된다.(Pitcher 1993). 물론 그와 같은 연대 평가는 방사성동위원소 연대측정법(radioisotope dating)에 의해 지지받는다고 주장되고 있다.

그러나 오랫동안 수용되어 왔던 이들 과정들에 대한 시간척도는 이제 전통적인 지질학자들에 의해서까지 도전받고 있다.(Clemens 2005; Petford et al. 2000). 이제 암석 변형의 필수적 역할이 인정되고 있다. 이전에 받아들여졌던 화강암 형성모델은 비현실적인 변형과 암석 및 마그마의 유동 습성을 요구했다. 또는 그 모델은 유용한 구조적 혹은 지구물리학적 데이터들을 만족하게 설명하지 못했다. 따라서 물리적 고려사항들은 화강암 형성은 10만 년 이하나, 단지 수천 년의 시간 틀 내에서 작동되는 ”빠르고 역동적인 과정“이었음을 제시하고 있다고 이제는 주장되고 있는 것이다.
